Mr. JeanneinDoha and I love heading out to The Pearl on the weekends. It's always pleasant to stroll around, muse over who would buy a QAR 600 Ralph Lauren Home cushion and admire the occasional yacht.
We also love having full tummies and two of our favorite breakfast spots are located at The Pearl. We go back to both time and time again, and are continually pleased with the wonderful food and great service at both venues.
Aryaas Express
Aryaas' breakfast selection essentially features dishes from around southern India and you can treat yourself to everything from idlis with sambar (fluffy rice cakes with a spicy vegetable curry) to masala dosa (thin savory pancakes with a range of chutney and curry accompaniments).
I believe Aryaas has a few outlets around Doha but from what I have gathered, their outfit at the Pearl is just that little bit more rarefied. Their menu is cheap and cheerful. Most breakfast plates range from QAR 15 - 30 per person. I have had the mini (reality: not mini at all) breakfast on a couple of occasions and that has become my go-to option off the menu. For a measly QAR 28, one finds oneself surrounded by small bowls of chutney and curry, upma (a savory semolina porridge), idlis, pooris (a puffed up chappati-type bread) and just about anything else the kitchen can whip up. Coffee and tea are included as well. That said the onion uttapam I tried recently was also lovely and I have included a picture of it below.
For a restaurant that serves food at a lower price point, I have found their service to be warm and endearing. Not only are the staff friendly and polite, but I have often left loaded down with free barfi and ladoos (Indian desserts) as well as other snackies.
Evergreen Organics
Ahhhhhh, Evergreen. Perhaps one of the best things to ever come out of Qatar. Where do I begin? My pictures don't do the place justice and I find it hard to describe how much I love their food.
Evergreen Organics is Qatar's first, and as far as I'm aware, only vegan restaurant. It was established by Qatari entrepreneur Ghanim al Sulaiti and is over the past couple of years has evolved into heaven for healthy eaters. Everything they serve up is delicious and whilst the price per plate is a little steep, it's totally warranted and worth it when you remember that they use wholly organic ingredients and make a lot of incredibly complex things from scratch e.g. cashew cheese, cranberry ketchup and nut milks.
Evergreen recently launched a new menu and Mr. JeanneinDoha and I tried out a few items off it. Well, in truth we tried a few more but gobbled those up so fast I couldn't grab a picture. My date and pear porridge was creamy and delectable: warm, comforting oats, smooth, creamy nut butter and just the right level of sweetness to complement the earthiness of the porridge. My husband's sunrise bowl was a tropical tease and I think the picture below speaks for itself. And whilst he isn't much of a yogi, he loved his yogi bliss smoothie. As for my matcha love latte: it was so awesome to enjoy a drink of this kind knowing that it was made from organic nut milk rather than (blerghhhhh) Almond Breeze.
On a side note, Evergreen now deliver to West Bay via the Talabat app and have also launched their own range of vegan cheeses and 'food-to-go'. I am very much looking forward to trying their organic kimchi soon.
